Removing the desktop background during remote sessions will improve responsiveness.
Remember, UK broadband users typically have upload speeds of 1MB or less (ADSL broadband is common in the UK).

@Info,
I see. I will forward this to the dev team.

@Carl,
This is not planned. Could I know why you want to add this feature?

I run into the problem with our remote location in the Philippines. When I connect to a computer with a high res desktop background image, the response time becomes so slow, I am unable to see the Windows logon screen before it goes back to the image.

Actually this would help A LOT. Many of us are stuck with ADSL and I often have to set the background of the remote PC to a blank page, then reset it back.
Makes a huge difference.

@all,
This will be added as a beta feature in next streamer release, I will keep you updated.

any update on removing desktop wallpaper when remoting to a client? Other remote desktop software already have this feature.... Displaying client wallpaper greatly reduces speed.

This function did not make it into 3.1.8. Any update as to when it will be available? I'll have plenty of time to read the reply while I wait for a response from a client with a hi-res desktop background image.

Lemuel,
I think we've added that option in the streamer but haven't added a control for it in the Splashtop Business app yet.
For now it can be enabled in the streamer by setting streamer registry key HideWallpaper = 1 (or add the key if it's not there).
Thanks, Phil

Thanks, Phil. "Search" finds numerous "Splashtop" registry entries. Just where in the registry should this go?

Lemuel, sorry for not being more specific.
Please add the key to:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Splashtop Inc.\Splashtop Remote Server
(above is assuming 64-bit Windows)
I tried it to make sure it works. Key type can be REG_DWORD.
Please let us know if that doesn't work.

Glad to hear. Thanks Lemuel.
When we add this wallpaper on/off control to the Splashtop Business app side, what do you think would be ideal: - global setting in Splashtop Business app that applies to *all* computers - per-computer setting that you can change in Splashtop Business app, before remoting in (e.g. under the gear icon of each computer) - in-session toggle via the toolbar (e.g. remote in, then toggle off wallpaper)

Phil,
In my years of support I've never needed to see the client wallpaper, so I'd be happy with a global default of Off. On the rare occasion I wanted to see someone's child/pet/vacation photo perhaps a this-client-only toggle in the View drop down list. Make it persistent across sessions.

I'd just like to add my two cents to the wallpaper controls discussion. A global on/off would be ideal. My concern however, that third party applications such as Atera may not be able to adjust a global control. Having some sort of control baked into the session controls would also be beneficial as well.

Good point :)
Appreciate both your suggestions, Lemuel and Eric. Very helpful.
So we'll likely add a global control in Splashtop Business app preferences. We'll think some more about an in-session control. For our RMM partners like Atera, we can enable them with options they can tweak when they launch the Splashtop for RMM app, to achieve the same effect as the global control.

I just tried this registry edit, on two windows 10 machines. Neither worked. Any chance this will be added to the GUI or as a global option on the account in the near future? its been 8 months since the previous comment saying it would be.

@Tyler,
This is a global option now using 3.2.6.0 Business app. Please open File dropdown list on the Splashtop Business app, go to Options/General to check Show solid color background on remote computer desktop option.
If it does not work on some remote computers, please make sure the streamer on them is also up to date.
Hope this helps.
Thanks, Vans

Your right! Not sure how i missed it. I was just in that menu a few months ago.
Thank you.
EDIT: in the 10ish times i've tried it, it has only worked once. All windows boxes.

Tyler,
Note that streamer needs to be at version 3.2.6.0 as well, for "remove wallpaper" to work.
I see some of your computers are on 3.2.6.0 while others are on older versions.
All computers will gradually (and automatically) update to 3.2.6.0 over the next 1-2 weeks (we roll it out progressively). If you want to update right away, you can hit "check for updates" from the web console or on the actual streamer UI.
Hope that makes sense.

Hello,
While I generally wholeheartedly agree with what folks in this post have said about turning off desktop backgrounds, it's causing me a problem with the latest release and I'm wondering what is the recommended method for getting around this. My client has multiple offices with PCs connected to large TVs mounted on their office walls that display various information. In the event I need to troubleshoot or work on these computers remotely, I continue to see 2 problems:
1) the desktop changes to a solid color but does not change back when I log off and the client wants their desktop background/logo to be persistent.
2) what is the best way to go about using this feature on a case by case basis? It looks like I can add a HideWallpaper=0 reg key to affected devices but is there a method in the streamer itself that I could turn on and off so that the vast majority of PCs running the streamer hide the wallpaper with some exceptions that do not?
Note that the first problem still trumps the 2nd one so in any case where I *ever* hide the wallpaper once, the user/computer loses its desktop wallpaper even after reboots which is trivial, kind of, but irritates many users.
Thank you

Thanks for the input, Aaron.
Let me first make sure - When "show solid background" is DISABLED, all works fine? Your clients' desktop backgrounds do not get lost?
Assuming that's the case, what you're looking for is an easy way to configure a specific streamer to DISABLE "show solid background", while Splashtop Business app generically enables "show solid background" across all other streamers?
We currently don't have such a toggle in the streamer UI. I forget if the streamer registry key will override what Splashtop Business app dictates; will check with our devs. Have you tried successfully with the registry key?
