Yes I agree! What is the best way to organize clients now?
+1 For this.
Would make the product so much more scalable.
This feature would be a great improvement and selling point
Do you need to buy the enterprise version to do this?
Yes, the software is only usable for a dozen machines or so. Much beyond that and without either grouping or being able to search/filter the list it isn't much good. Such a shame, as the performance absolutely blows every other solution out of the water.
Hi All,
I have received a response from Splashtop support regarding this. I have copied their response below. Looks like it is in the pipeline.
Would “grouping” function help? it allows you to group computers to avoid a long list…
Please check in within weeks… it will be released soon.
The feature is already there for our on-premise enterprise app…. just being rolled into our SAAS solution.
Ok, quick question. I am testing splashtop because of the recent LogMeIn fiasco. What used to cost me $300 will now cost me $1,500 with them. So, I am trying to find a good replacement. I tried Spashtop but didn't like that it just uses the computer name. I didn't see any way to change the way each computer is labeled in the list of computers. Jbob23, how did you change the names? Did you have to actually change each computer's physical name? I just want to label each computer with a name to help me organize and be able to find the computer I am looking for. If a customer calls and asks me to check something on their computer, it makes it real tough when the computers have names like JB67YX4. I'd like to label them with names like COMPANY ABC - Bob. Any tips would be helpful.
Duh, I found it. I can't change the name from the list on MY computer, I have to go into the Splashtop settings on the remote computer and I can then change the name there. That helps a TON. I think I'll buy the license even if I don't make this my ultimate solution. The price is just so fair that I like to help Splashtop for being fair.
I was in the same situation. Once I figured out that I could group them with a prefix I was all aboard. You're right though, this isn't an ultimate solution but with the price and the quality, I have no problem using it.
We need to be able to Group the Computers or Put them in OU? The Price is right without having to configure routers its awesome!! Just install the client and your finished...
Any update on the grouping feature that anyone's aware of? A previous poster had mentioned he had feedback of a 'few weeks'...
A guy from Splashtop support called Mark Lee suggested it was in the pipeline and due in a 'few weeks', that was back in Jan.
I gave up waiting and went elsewhere as we need something that scales up and is more reliable.
Without the ability to group computers the product is of little use to me. Although $60 is a lot cheaper than Logmein Central. Logmein Central management is on of the main reasons I use it.
I spoke to support and VP product development, ability to search is coming and ability to create custom rollouts for clients with prefixes coming. They do hear you at Splashtop. You can also rename clients in the web console, the next time they check in they get the new name.
Currently on your desktop you can search in the webconsole and then click connect this will launch the right computer.
Cheers,

Pat.Mulligan, that is exactly why I still use LogMeIn. I have too many client PCs NOT to have groups. I like the product, but to be frank, if this is indeed supposed to rival LMI, it at the very least needs to have the functionality that LMI has.
In addition to Grouping, I am missing: Chat, screen blanking, whiteboard, pointer, reboot options, wake on LAN, etc..
Superior performance alone is not enough for me to cut the chord from LMI.
According to the post in January, a customer was told that the grouping feature was already available for the on-premise model and just needed to be deployed on the SaaS platform. It's been roughly 8 months.. what is the holdup?
Guidemullinax, I am the individual who posted in January 2013 that Splashtop support had told me that it was a feature which was in the pipeline and could be expected very soon, I think I even named the individual within Splashtop who me this.
At the time I was already a paying Splashtop user so they had nothing really to sell me, so took it at face value.
I gave up waiting long ago and went elsewhere for our primary remote desktop/support facilities, still use Splashtop as a backup though.
But the fact is that this product cannot scale without a grouping feature, and it seems insane not to have it.
So much so, I'm starting to think its a tactic to discourage heavy use until the product matures or maybe there are capacity issues.
I cut the cord with LMI last year, the way they handled the price hikes of LMI Central and the all-or-nothing licensing model in LMI pro, I felt they were a company I couldn't trust to become dependant/reliant on their service.
The removal of their freemium product with 7 days notice took the biscuit. A lot of people used that freemium product in good faith to support 1 or 2 family members and the like, don't understand why they didn't just restrict to a few devices and stick ads in there.
Thank you for the quick response and follow-up! If you don't mind me asking, what did you move to? Our LMI Central subscription will come due in October and I plan on having everything ready to migrate over to something else by then.
I am with you on the whole license and pricing (Scam as I call it) from LMI.
We manage a little over 300 machines, so by not having grouping, I am passing this over. Too bad, it looked as if it had potential.
- Cheers,
The grouping isn't that big of an issue once you figure out how to name the machines. Right after installation, you need to give each computer a friendly name within the Splashtop settings. I use something like ABC Company - Bob and XYZ Company - Jane. That way I can scroll to the company that is having the problem and find that particular user fairly quickly. Is LMI faster, yes. But, this isn't too bad. I'm sure they will eventually get grouping and that will help, but it is usable without it.
My main frustration was before they fixed the ability to log onto a computer regardless of which user account was already logged in locally. Made the product unusable. I needed to be able to access the computer no matter who was logged in. Now that is fixed as long as you choose the appropriate option during install.
The product is slowly getting better. I still pay for LMI although I was VERY frustrated after the whole pricing issue and doing away with the free accounts. They must have some total idiot at the top making decisions. That is usually the way things go.
I am not scrolling through 300 machines in a list, nor and I going to rename that many... So, grouping IS a big deal to me.
That is why it is important to name them at the time of install for each machine. I have about 350 machines and the scrolling really isn't a big deal. The thing I wish they had was a search field like the LMI Client. No scrolling, and grouping is a non issue. I just start typing the company name and it lists only the computers that match. I would much rather see that in Splashtop before grouping.
Obviously we all need to drop our opinions and simply do what you say... Yes sir, I will stop wanting grouping and name the computers like you say. What shall I do next, kind sir?
Hey, you don't have to be a jerk. I'm here to offer a solution that works and you act like a total jerk. You act like 300 computers is WAY too many to scroll through, yet it takes seconds to find the one you need as I have done it plenty of times. I understand that since you hadn't named them something friendly at first then yes, that would be a total pain to have to go back and do. I'm not telling you to do anything. I couldn't care less what you do. I am simply letting you know that is doable if done right at the beginning. I know I would appreciate someone letting me know some tricks to make things work better and that is all I was trying to do for you. Everyone does things differently with every program and OS available. What works for one person doesn't work for another. I'll be sure and not offer any other solutions for you though as you seem to stuck in doing things one way and only one way.
ROFL! You mad bro? You sound mad... Perhaps you should work off some steam and go name some computers.
Anyway ... GROUPING, yeah I would like that please.
Grow up Guidemullinax. The suggestions made are perfectly reasonable given the current functionality, no need to go ape in your response. I second (third/fourth...100th) the grouping feature would be great, and I'm sure it'll come if only due to popular demand eventually. For those of us who choose to stick with the product, naming is all we have at the moment. If you choose to complain instead of action, leave the rest of us alone.
Incidentally, I'm not the same 'Support' as above in previous comments - different continent :-)
Nice try... you seriously need help.
Back on topic, Splashtop team - any idea when this might be available?
